A Joint Rate and FEC Adaptation Approach to Enable High Speed Broadcast in IEEE 802.11 Networks

چکیده
Rate adaptation is a MAC-layer mechanism in IEEE 802.11 networks to ensure efficient utilization of constantly varying wireless channel. However, for broadcast communication, most commodity wireless drivers only support the base rates (i.e., 1 or 2 Mbps in 802.11b/b+g and 6Mbps in 802.11a/g), leaving the channel capacity significantly underutilized. In this paper, we present a novel rate adaptation framework designed for wireless broadcast to improve the 802.11 network performance. This framework jointly selects the data rate and the error protection level at the same time. It has been also designed in a manner that it does not require changes to legacy applications or to the 802.11 standards (thus can work in existing 802.11 networks). Using the performance measurement study in live networking environments, we show that the proposed scheme provides substantial improvement in performance while providing low application level loss, and can adapt to different operational environments.

متن کاملMARS: Link-layer rate selection for multicast transmissions in wireless mesh networks
IEEE 802.11 devices dynamically choose among different modulation schemes and bitrates for frame transmissions. This rate adaptation, however, is restricted only to unicast frames. Multicast (and broadcast) frames are constrained to use a fixed low bit-rate modulation, resulting in low throughput for multicast streams. Availability of high bandwidth and efficient use of the medium is crucial to...

In high density (HD) IEEE 802.11 WLAN, packet loss can occur due to co-channel interference (asynchronous interference) or collisions (synchronous interference). In order to effectively mitigate the interference for spatial reuse, the causes of packet loss should be differentiated and corresponding network parameters (Physical Carrier Sensing (PCS) threshold, transmit power (TXPW) and contentio...
متن کاملA highly reliable broadcast scheme for IEEE 802.11 multi-hop ad hoc networks
In wired networks, the broadcast data packets can be easily and safely delivered to destinations. Nevertheless, it is a big challenge to transfer the broadcast frames over the IEEE 802.11 based multi-hop ad hoc wireless networks due to the high bit error rate, the high collision probability, and the lake of acknowledgement (ACK). Unfortunately, most of routing protocols need the broadcast funct...
